The Milk House

The Milk House

The Milk House was built in 1849 to support the Shakers' dairy operation. A trough, on the lowest floor of the building, was fed with cool well water. Filled containers were placed in the cool water to help preserve the milk.

After years of disuse and disrepair, the building is in great need of stabilization before it deteriorates further, requiring yet more work.

In November of 2022, Maggie Viverito donated $18,000 in memory of her mother Claire Viverito for Milk House restoration. It became the foundation of our Milk House Fund. Since then it has continued to grow, thanks to our members' kind donations, to over $35,000. This will allow us to continue working toward the restoration of the Milk House. The bids to complete the total restoration came to over $60,000.

In 2025, while the stabilization has been completed, we continue to raise funds to help us further restore the Milk House. If you would like to donate to this fund, please mail a check to the address below or click on the Donate button at the bottom of the page.
